Subcutaneous Structure Imager (SSI)

Grand Prize

Abstract

Our solution is the Subcutaneous Structure Imager (SSI), a patent developed by NASA’s Glenn Research Center in order to locate non-visible veins in patients. Unlike current vein finders, the SSI helps medical providers ensure the safety and comfort of their patients by allowing quick, easy vein access, even in complicated cases. Some of the key value drivers of the SSI are higher first‑attempt IV success in high‑risk and underserved patient populations (children, older adults, patients with larger body types, darker skin tones, etc.), faster vascular access in time‑critical emergency situations, and a lightweight, portable design that requires minimal training and functions across all skin tones and environments. By improving visibility where traditional methods fail, SSI supports more equitable care and helps clinicians deliver safer and more consistent outcomes under pressure.
